Launch a Kids Program

Good Morning, Box Leaders!

After last week’s edition, your Google My Business profile should look much better than other gyms in your town. Even if it isn’t ranked first (yet), if you google “Gyms Near Me”, yours should pop out as being clearly the most professional in Google Map’s list. For now, keep asking for reviews and keep up to date on your hours/events. Soon we’ll get your gym to be the most clicked on the entire list.

This week we’re going to recommend CrossFit Kids (or kids program for you non-affiliate gyms):

Why CrossFit Kids Works:

Parents are increasingly prioritizing their children’s health and extracurricular activities. A CrossFit Kids program provides a safe, supportive environment where kids can develop strength, coordination, and teamwork skills. By offering a dedicated program, you attract families to your gym, fostering loyalty and creating a vibrant, multi-generational community.

How to Implement a Successful CrossFit Kids Program:

Start by designing a 6-8 week program tailored to different age groups, making sure activities are age-appropriate and engaging. Call it “New Year” or “Winter” session, and try to do one every season. We do 30 minute sessions on Sundays or a random night of the week at 4pm, with young kids going first and then older kids second.

Structure the program with a clear base price for the entire duration, making it easy for parents to commit. Incorporate games, challenges, and positive reinforcement to keep sessions lively and enjoyable. You can find a lot of already laid-out CrossFit Kids programs online. Highlight the benefits of physical activity, discipline, and social interaction to appeal to parents’ desires for their children’s growth.

Important Notes:

It takes the right “coach” to run a kids program, and maybe the right coach isn’t you. It’s not me, that’s for sure. Find a fun and motivated coach and pay them well for their time.

CrossFit has flip-flopped their policy a couple times as to who can coach or advertise a CrossFit Kids course. As of right now, you just need an L1 to coach it: https://www.crossfit.com/certificate-courses/online-kids

Make sure that your insurance policy covers the correct ages you are trying to run your program for. For a few years we had to modify our kids’ program offerings to meet our insurance requirements.

Parents are used to paying for their kids’ activities. You can charge just as much as you would for an adult for your 6-8 week program - don’t shy away from charging what it’s worth.

If you consistently run these programs, they WILL grow. Parents talk and are looking for things to do with their kids. We have a lot of kids who participate whose parent’s aren’t members of the gym - they just see the value in our program.

Implementing a CrossFit Kids program is a strategic move to attract new members, increase revenue, and enrich your gym’s community. By offering a fun, engaging, and structured fitness program for children, you meet the needs of both parents and young athletes, setting your gym apart in a competitive market.

Action Steps:

  1. Design the Program: Create a 6-8 week CrossFit Kids curriculum with age-appropriate activities.

  2. Set Pricing: Charge once for the whole program, not per class or month.

  3. Promote Locally: Partner with schools, use social media, and leverage in-gym signage to spread the word.

  4. Engage Coaches: Train your staff or find your person to deliver energetic, child-friendly sessions that emphasize safety and fun. They need to be an L1 (for now, if you’re a CrossFit gym).

  5. Gather Feedback: After the program, collect feedback from parents and kids to refine and improve future offerings.

Keep going.
